“Living in a Gifted World: Parents and their Gifted Children–Challenges and Survival”

This session will provide a basic understanding of ‘what is giftedness?’, exploring the unique and often complex characteristics that may be present in these children. For parents, this session will discuss how the characteristics accompanying giftedness may cause challenges in school as well as in parenting at home.  Tools for ‘survival’–to help these children to be successful–will be discussed as well.

About the Speaker:

Dr Laurie Alisat PhD is a GATE Learning Leader at Henry Wise Wood High School.

Laurie has worked in education for over 25 years.  Many of those years she worked with gifted learners and specifically in Gifted Education, as a Teacher, Learning Leader, System Strategist, Lecturer, and Counsellor–that work was further supported by a PhD in Gifted Education.   Amidst that, Laurie has had the opportunity to assist in international research around creativity in education, which culminated in the publishing of “Creativity in Education: A Global Conversation” with Dr. Robert Kelly.  Having spoken at numerous conferences, Laurie seeks a greater understanding of gifted learners and how best to meet their academic, social, and emotional needs.
